Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
