Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
